Deb Baker, Founder of the Hooved Animal Sanctuary in Chelsea, Vt., looks at the mound of burdocks she pulled out of the tail of an unnamed Quarter Horse mare that was rescued Saturday along with 20 other starving horses at a farm in Lyndon Center, Vt.. Hooved Animal Sanctuary rescued this horse and one other, a horse that was found emaciated, without food and water in a stall, and is now working to rehabilitate both animals. As rehabilitation work is costly and time-consuming, the shelter is accepting donations of money and hay via their website, hooved.org.

When Wathley sold the farm she ran with her late husband and sister from 1965 to 1998, she intigrated the herd into the Pinello Farm's herd and began helping with milking as well as managing the breeding program.
